For the past couple of years I have been dabbling into illustrations and sharing sharing my work under the Instagram profile name @RN_Doodle . I’ve always loved art and have done some amateur level stuff, primarily for myself, and I always doodle and sketch note. Not, until recently I started to look at art as a form of communication. Not a new concept, but new to me. Last year when I was putting my HCPMA project together together, an incredible colleague Dr. Brenna Morse PhD, RN-BC, NCSN, CNE donated her stethoscope to the art piece.
This year, when Dr. Morse reached out to collaborate on her research and create some translational illustrations, it was an absolute yes from me and I was happy to give a friend a call, MK Czerwiec, RN, MA aka @comicnurse.
Dr. Morse (@NurseBrennaM) shared the following on Twitter:
the Parent Pain Perspectives study was funded by the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) in 2018. I interviewed parents of children with complex conditions to explore experiences with pain-related encounters and care and to determine ways in which pain processes can be improved.
In addition to sharing information about pain characteristics, management, care experiences, and communication, parents were adamant that to provide adequate pain care, care team members need to:
1. treat parents like partners in the process, and
2. remember that children with complex conditions can hear and remember providers’ words, demeanor, and actions even while providers may underestimate the abilities of the children.
As COVID moved in-person conferences to virtual models, I realized a cost savings with grant funds reserved for travel and was able to carry out an innovative science communication initiative that involved partnership with two amazing nurse graphic artists @artayyeb and @comicnurse.
I met to discuss the study, the two themes I wanted to communicate with art posters, and continued to meet until we felt we had it right. We are pleased to present the poster series communicating the concepts “parents as partners” and “I can hear you”
Thanks to continued grant support from the American Society for Pain Management Nursing, the posters will be distributed to schools, care centers, and clinics around the globe so that clinicians, family, and visitors may be reminded of these two important themes.
