Lindsey Harris began her nursing journey at Samford University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a minor in Business.  After earning a BSN, Harris received her MSN with a concentration in family practice and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing.

Dr. Lindsey Harris worked as a family nurse practitioner at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medicine and an Assistant Professor at the UAB School of Nursing.

Harris is the youngest and the first person of color to serve as president of the Alabama State Nurses Association in 107 years. During her time as president, Dr. Harris advanced the organization’s mission and vision of promoting nursing being the professional voice of registered nurses.  She has presented extensively on healthcare disparities, access to care, mentorship, mental health, and nursing advocacy issues. Harris continues to address healthcare inequities that have been highlighted by COVID-19. Proficient in Spanish, she helped to manage COVID-19 vaccine sites improving access in Hispanic communities. Harris was named an Alabama Influencer and was featured on billboards, media spots, and mailers statewide. Dr. Harris has also been recognized by her colleagues and professional organizations receiving several honors and awards.  She has received awards from the National Black Nurses Association as the National Black Advance Practice Nurse of the Year and the National Black Staff Nurse of the Year.  She has also received the Living Legacy Award from Samford University and the Joann Barnett Compassionate Care Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. Lindsey was awarded the Young Alumni of the Year Award from Samford University and has recently been inducted into the American Academy of Nursing.

 

Dr. Harris is actively involved in working within the community. She is the past president of the Birmingham Black Nurses Association, and a member of the Hispanic Nurses Association, Philippine Nurses of Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. As the past president of the Birmingham Black Nurses Association, Harris leveraged partnerships with the state’s minority nursing associations, local city officials, hospital and pharmacy associations, and district church leaders in efforts to increase healthcare access and education in Alabama’s underrepresented communities.

Dr. Harris is now completing a fellowship in health policy with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  As a public servant in the House of Representatives, Harris serves as a Legislative Fellow in Representative Lauren Underwoods' office, working towards advancing women’s health equity worldwide.
